One of the most important factors of career success is emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is made up of five elements: Self Awareness, Self Management, Empathy, Social Skills, Leadership Assertiveness. In this post, we will focus on how to develop your emotional intelligence with self management.
We become self aware through our thoughts, feelings and whatever we have going on inside ourselves. What we need to do is learn how to self manage once we become aware of those feeling. Self management means asking yourself “what is my intent in doing what I’m about to do?”
So let’s say someone on your team does something that you feel a little annoyed about and you want to lash out. You can self manage by thinking, “Ok I’m about to lash out, but that is going to lead into real big problems between myself and this person on the team.” So, I instead you choose to do something different and look at the best possible way you can respond even though you may be upset. That’s how you develop your emotional intelligence with self-management.
